Central Piedmont Community College Hosting National Apprenticeship Week Panel

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The “Talent Pipeline Partnership,” including member Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC), will host a Nov. 4, National Apprenticeship Week breakfast and panel discussion to inform and encourage local employers to consider apprenticeship programs. Representatives from companies participating in the Apprenticeship 2000 and Apprenticeship Charlotte initiatives will join the panel discussion.

Nov. 2-8, is the inaugural National Apprenticeship Week, so designated by the U.S Department of Labor and President Obama. National Apprenticeship Week is an opportunity for colleges, companies, workers, students and economic development representatives to tell the story of apprenticeships. The week also is an invitation to business and industry, career seekers and community-based organizations to learn about the real-world advantages of developing careers and worker pipelines through the apprenticeship model.

The Nov. 4, National Apprenticeship Week breakfast will take place at the Charlotte Chamber, 330 S. Tryon Street, starting at 7:30 a.m. Charlotte-area employers who have an interest in learning more about or launching an apprenticeship program are invited to attend. The Talent Pipeline Partnership is a Mecklenburg County network of various organizations whose purpose is to educate businesses about available workplace-learning resources that can develop and grow their talent pipelines. The partnership also provides resources to students and parents about available jobs in high-demand industries such as advanced manufacturing, IT, healthcare and the skilled trades. Partnership members include the Charlotte Chamber, Charlotte Works, the City of Charlotte, CPCC, Goodwill, MeckEd and Mecklenburg County.

In addition to the employer breakfast, Charlotte Works and CATS will host a Nov. 2, tour of the CATS maintenance facility for high school juniors and seniors. The tour is an opportunity for CATS to provide information and recruit for its pre-apprenticeship program.

On Oct. 20, Mecklenburg County Manager Dena Diorio announced the county will provide $200,000 to establish the “Building with our Veterans” initiative. The program will fund a pre-apprenticeship program with CPCC to train building code inspectors, giving preference to military veterans.

“Apprenticeship is a centuries-old earn-and-learn training model that combines work-based learning with related classroom instruction, using the highest industry standards,” explained Richard Zollinger, CPCC vice president for learning and workforce development. “Employers that offer apprenticeship programs can diversify their workforce, improve productivity and profitability, standardize training and reduce turnover.”

Through the Apprenticeship 2000 program, which began in 1995, CPCC has graduated 134 apprentices, who went on to work for companies such as Ameritech, Blum, Chiron, Daetwyler, Pfaff and Siemens. Another 52 students currently are working as Apprenticeship 2000 apprentices.

In the newer Apprenticeship Charlotte program that CPCC launched in 2012, 47 students are working as apprentices for a number of companies, including Bosch, Cummins, Daimler, Eclipse Automation, Groninger, HAWE Hydraulics, Muratec and Siemens.

“Apprenticeships are an excellent way for students to pursue a sustainable career without accumulating college debt,” said Mary Vickers-Koch, CPCC dean, Harris Campus and business and industry training services. “Apprenticeships have significant benefits for the individual, the employer and the community at-large.”

The U.S. currently has approximately 375,000 apprentices working with more than 150,000 employers. Last year, President Obama established a goal of doubling the number of apprenticeships within five years. The inaugural National Apprenticeship Week is one of several initiatives helping achieve that goal.
