Q&A with CJ Scarlett, Tiger Eye Sensor, Inc.

RESEARCH TRIANGLE, N.C. -- Tiger Eye Sensor, Inc., the leader in the hands-free, wearable, personal security device market, was recently selected as a finalist in the Small Business Administration (SBA) 2015 InnovateHER Business Challenge in Washington, D.C. The following is a conversation with CJ Scarlet, company founder, about other exciting developments with Tiger Eye.

Q: What’s Tiger Eye been experiencing lately?

CJ: So much has been happening, primarily we’ve been receiving a large number of invitations to pitch the company at competitions and to potential investors. Along the way, we’re continuing work on developing a test product, and are making headway toward completing a prototype of our seminal product, the Tiger Eye Security Sensor™ or TESS™. We are making improvements to TESS™, such as making the device trainable by a person’s voice and also having the device being able to capture five seconds of audio before fully activating, in essence meaning the device is always “on” to deal with assaults. We’re also advancing in discussions with North American home monitoring companies interested in offering TESS™ as a product for their customers. We’re also experiencing a good deal of media interest in TESS™ from national as well as regional news outlets.

Q: What’s been the response to TESS during your pitches?

CJ: We’ve been pitching locally here in the RTP area as well as via phone to people in Silicon Valley and New York, and across the board everybody loves the concept. There’s a genuine desire for it, not just a need. As result of these pitches we have honed our business plan so it’s super sharp. We are now in the due diligence process with several angel networks.

Q: What is driving the technical changes to TESS?

CJ: We’re getting great feedback during our pitches and event participation. We’re tweaking the functionality as we consider use cases for TESS™; we are trying to keep the device sleek and user friendly but at the same time having functions and features to fit a variety of situations. It’s important for us to always consider needs of somebody in a high stress criminal situation and make it as easy to use as possible.

Q: How do you explain TESS™ generating buzz in mainstream America?

Tiger Eye Sensor, Inc. Founder CJ Scarlett
CJ: There is greater and growing awareness of sexual assault and domestic violence among celebrities and sports figures and there’s much quicker and more concerned response. The internet brings people together, and creates the ability to be more sympathetic and compassionate toward people in difficult situations. Now they have compelling information to read and watch and feel a greater connection, so media and public awareness is growing.

Q: What are you hearing from people about assault in general?

CJ: When we’re talking with people, practically everyone we talk to has been or knows somebody who has been a victim of a violent crime. That’s why they’re so excited about TESS™; the idea that there’s a product or solution that can prevent such assaults and provide actionable evidence is accepted by the public.

Q: What kind of impact do you think TESS™ on assault prevention across the country?

CJ: I firmly believe TESS™ will lead more women to report rape because there will be actionable evidence collected by TESS™; for every rapist you take off the street there are so many other victims who can be saved. It’s all about actionable evidence.
