RTRP to Relocate to New Offices along Cary’s Weston Parkway

RESEARCH TRIANGLE, N.C. -- Rapid growth at RDU International Airport is good news for the Research Triangle Region, even though it is prompting the relocation of Research Triangle Regional Partnership (RTRP), the multi-county economic development organization that has long resided in the headquarters of the RDU Airport Authority on Trade Drive. On February 1, 2015, the Partnership will relocate its operations to a 3,000-square-foot space at the North Carolina Bar Center in Cary.

“RDU needs the space, and that’s a sign of the airport’s success and the region’s success,” said Charles Hayes, president and CEO of RTRP, which had been housed at RDU since its founding almost 25 years ago. Last July, the airport announced that the number of departing passengers at RDU had grown 5.8 percent year-over-year. The number of arriving passengers had risen 6.1 percent over the same period. Major upgrades to RDU’s Terminals One and Two, additional daily flights and major events in the region such as the men and women’s U.S. Open tournaments and the World of Bluegrass festival help account for the increasing traffic at RDU.

Airport officials were flexible in offering RTRP ample time to identify other facilities. The partnership worked with a commercial real estate broker to explore potential alternatives before arriving at space at 8000 Weston Parkway, home to the North Carolina Bar Association.  “We’ll remain conveniently located at the center of the region and just a few minutes from the airport,” Hayes said. Better still, RTRP will be housed just down the Parkway from the headquarters of the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina (EDPNC). EDPNC, the private statewide recruiting entity spun off from the N.C. Department of Commerce last year, moved into office space at 15000 Weston Parkway in October.

Hayes and his seven-person team are satisfied their new space has all the amenities the organization needs, including free parking, attractive conference facilities and ample room to grow. The new space met RTRP’s budget as well. Hayes presented the terms of the lease to the organization’s executive committee on November 20th, which gave the go-ahead to sign the lease and make the move. “We’ve got great new space in a great building at a great price,” Hayes said.
