CCME Board of Directors Elects New Chairman

CARY, N.C. -- The Carolinas Center for Medical Excellence (CCME) Board of Directors elected John B. Smith, MD, as its new chairman at their most recent board meeting. “CCME is extremely lucky to have a highly respected and experienced individual leading our board,” said CCME President and Chief Executive Officer Joy Hogan Rozman. “Dr. Smith brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise that will be invaluable as CCME expands opportunities and continues to improve the quality of health care for individuals, organizations, and regions.”

Dr. Smith is a family practitioner active in pediatrics, adult medicine, and geriatrics. Educated at NC State University, UNC, and Bowman Gray School of Medicine, Dr. Smith joined Clinton Medical Clinic in 1980. He is a certified medical director of two local nursing homes and a hospital skilled care unit. Dr. Smith has previously held the position of CCME board president from November 2007 to October 2011.

“It is organizations like CCME that are leading the way in providing innovative solutions that create healthy communities,” said Dr. Smith. “I am excited to continue in a leadership position on the board and help guide this organization through its next chapter.”

Dr. Smith has also served as president of Sampson County Medical Society; member of Sampson County Board of Health; and medical staff president of Sampson Regional Medical Center. He was named North Carolina Family Physician of the Year in 2000 by the North Carolina Academy of Family Physicians.

    Charles T. Frock as vice-chairman; Mr. Frock served as chief executive officer of FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst, NC
    Marilyn J. Schaffner, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, CGRN, as secretary; Dr. Schaffner is chief nursing executive and clinical services administrator at the Medical University of South Carolina’s Medical Center
    Roger A. Gaddy, MD, as treasurer; Dr. Gaddy is a family physician from Winnsboro, SC
