Cisco Layoffs Hitting Research Triangle Park

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. -- Multiple news reports cite Cisco Systems as beginning layoffs at its Research Triangle Park campus. This new round of layoffs is part of a previously announced global restructuring that’s expected to trim 6,000 jobs globally. Cisco operates its second largest campus in RTP with approximately 5,000 employees. Its largest headquarters is in Silicon Valley.

The cuts are designed to align Cisco’s workforce of 75,000 with emerging technology markets. This summer Cisco gained approval to receive $12.9 million in hiring incentives in North Carolina for adding a planned 550 jobs. The incentive package requires Cisco to fill vacancies caused by layoffs before the company can count new hires toward its 550 total.

Cisco recently completed another restructuring that claimed some 3,400 jobs locally, including an unspecified number in North Carolina. The company confirmed it is cutting jobs but would not disclose how many. It also is continuing to hire at the site, and laid-off workers can apply for open positions, the company says.
