Wilmington Business RadioX Special Edition Voice of Business Show Features ScreenGems and Wilmington Film Commission

WILMINGTON, N.C. -- On July 11, 2014, Wilmington Business Radio aired The Voice of Business with Wilmington Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Connie Majure-Rhett and co-host Ann Revell-Pechar. Majure-Rhett invited guests Johnny Griffin and Bill Vassar into the studio to discuss Wilmington's film industry and the state of North Carolina's film incentives. Johnny Griffin is the Director of The Wilmington Regional Film Commission, an organization that is responsible for marketing the unique assets found within southeastern North Carolina to the production industry. Since the early 1980's, Wilmington has been a popular production hub due to diverse locations, competitive incentives, experienced crew, highly prized professional production services and the largest soundstage on the east coast.

There are 1,700 people in the Wilmington area employed by the film industry. More than $500 million has been spent by the film industry in Wilmington over the last three years, making film one of the area's leading industries. Although the majority of the work is individually contracted, if all those employed by film were to be under one roof, that company would be in the top five largest employers in the community.

"A film industry cannot be created somewhere just because it has incentives in place. Wilmington is different because we have an established industry and infrastructure in place that needs to be maintained and grown," explained Griffin.

Bill Vassar is the Executive Vice President of EUE Screen Gems Studios, the largest studio complex east of California. EUE Screen Gems provides a 50 acre sound stage where over 350 productions have been shot, most recently including "Iron Man III," "Under the Dome," " Sleepy Hollow" and "One Tree Hill".

The film industry has been major support to the tourism industry in Wilmington. Shows filmed in the region, such as "Dawson's Creek" and "One Tree Hill," have large fan bases that will travel to see film sites in person and take the revived EUE Screen Gems studio tours.

Griffin and Vassar expressed their hope that Wilmington will be able to continue offering incentives to keep the film industry alive and growing. To learn more about these featured guests, listen to the entire interview on Wilmington Business Radio.
