SEC Investor Outreach Event Coming to Charlotte July 17

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The SEC, in collaboration with the United States Attorney’s Office, is hosting an Investor Outreach event in Charlotte on Thursday, July 17, 2014 from 2 - 4 p.m. at the UNC Charlotte Center City Campus in Room 901 (320 E. 9th St., Charlotte, NC). The event is free of charge and open to the public.

Part of the SEC’s primary mission is to protect investors. In order to fulfill this mission, the SEC strongly believes that preventing and avoiding investment fraud is not only critical but essential to that purpose. An area of particular concern is “affinity fraud." Affinity fraud includes investment schemes that prey upon members of identifiable groups, including individuals with a shared race, religion, language, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, military service or other factors, including age. Scams exploit the trust and friendship that exist in groups of people who have something in common. Many affinity scams involve “Ponzi” and pyramid schemes, where new investor money is used to make payments to earlier investors to give the illusion that the investment is successful.

In addition to the Investor Outreach event, the SEC provides free and unbiased educational materials that can assist individuals in making knowledgeable investment choices and decisions. Some of the topics include: saving and investing, mutual funds and variable annuities. Furthermore, any member of the chamber may access investor.gov for information, tips and advice.

Parking: UNC Charlotte recommends using the pay-by-day lots located a few blocks away ($5 cash only). The parking lots located directly across from UNC Charlotte Center City are by permit only.
