Business Profile: Mi-Corporation

NCTechNews is publishing a series of business profiles to highlight innovation and entrepreneurism throughout North Carolina. Today we are featuring Mi-Corporation, a Durham-based enterprise mobility software company.

Q: When was your company founded and why?
A: 1999. Our co-founders Dr. Greg Clary and Jim Clary (son and father) had founded their own software and hardware companies, coming out of IBM and RTI respectively. An investor pointed out the synergies and suggested they merge the company. Voila, Mi-Corporation (the “Mobile Information Corporation”) was formed to create positive impacts in the worlds of organizations and their mission critical processes and has continued to do so for 14 years with great success!

Q: Where is your HQ and how many employees do you have?
A: Durham, NC in the heart of the Research Triangle area. There is a growing team of about 20 dedicated Mi-Corporation employees, and a growing network of 70+ channel partners around the world who define the Mi-Corporation ecosystem.

Q: What are your company’s core products or services?
A: Enterprise Mobility Software to automate mission-critical business processes. Our core flagship product is Mi-Forms, a mobile data capture platform that helps organizations transform their paper-processes to digital processes, producing great efficiency & productivity boosts. We are also launching an end-to-end Mobile Field Inspection solution to automate the business processes of field inspectors, as well as provide their management key metrics & reports on their performance with a ‘Big Data’ angle to it. Our other major new product is a mobile app middleware framework, called Mi-Enterprise Apps, that allows mobile app developers to manage, deploy and integrate mobile apps with all their enterprise infrastructure at a fraction of the cost and very quickly. We offer services that complement our products too and provide best practices guidance, advice and training on running successful mobility projects.

Q: Who are some recognizable members of your leadership team?
A: Greg Clary is our co-founder and CEO. He has a PhD in Computer Science and 10 patents to his name at Mi-Corporation, with 3 more pending. He worked formerly at IBM’s TJ Watson Research Center and was part of the team that produced the IBM CrossPad device and has been an early visionary in Tablet computing.

Chris DiPierro is our CTO and has also been with Mi-Corporation for 14 years, and shares inventorship in our patents also. He drives our company product visions forward, has more experience than most with various mobile devices ranging from Palm Pilots to Digital Pens to modern Tablet Computers, and leads our technical operations as well.

Q: Does your company develop new technologies or re-apply existing technologies to solve a problem?
A: We develop our own innovative, flexible, robust software products to solve customers’ mission-critical business process problems with mobile devices. 14 years ago we were on the leading edge of the marketplace, and we are innovating again to leap ahead and offer customers compelling value and make a positive impact in the world.

Q: Who are your customers?
A: Medium-large organizations around the world ranging from Government agencies like the US Department of Transportation & NC Department of Agriculture, to Fortune 500 companies like Newmont Mining, AT&T and Eli Lilly.

Q: What problems does your company solve?
A: The problems related to mission-critical business processes that are being constrained by paper, which is slow, costly & inefficient to process, and results in lost productivity & delayed reporting of important information. Also for mobile app developers, the problem of how to deliver mobile apps once built and manage security, workflow, offline syncing, integration to enterprise systems and more.

Q: Who are your competitors and how is your company different?
A: Various small businesses and niche products from companies like Adobe, Microsoft etc., and the status-quo (paper)! Mi-Corporation offers far more flexible technology than competitors, supporting more devices, more data types (GPS, barcodes, voice, photo etc.) and more robust integration options, all with powerful offline capabilities. Mi-Corporation also has 14 years of experience in mobility projects, more than most competitors, and the associated know-how, best practices guidance, training, and top-rated support that make these projects a success.

Q: Please share examples of situations where your services achieved a positive result for clients.
A: There are quite an overwhelming number of examples but a couple of representative ones shared below are:

The NC Department of Agriculture has taken a 2-4 week process, to get a citizen a permit to sell pesticides after an inspection, down to 1-2 days, thanks to their transformation of their paper inspection process with a Mi-Corporation solution. Along the way they have also produced savings of about $220,000 to date and made their inspectors more efficient & productive, while keeping pesticides safe in the state of NC.

The NYU College of Dentistry provides free and subsidized dental care around the US and the world and needs to document information about all patients seen, care given, results etc. for billing purposes & to report to sponsors. In their paper process, they spent about 500 man-hours on each trip entering this data into Excel, which was often late resulting in lost billings. With a Mi-Forms Tablet solution and a digital transformation, they have eliminated all their manual data-entry and improved billing that will support their critical program that provides important care to patients around the world and keeps sponsors happy.

Q: What new products or services or services will you be rolling-out in 2014?

A: We are launching an end-to-end Mobile Field Inspection solution to automate the business processes of field inspectors, as well as provide their management key metrics & reports on their performance with a ‘Big Data’ angle to it. Our other major new product is a mobile app middleware framework, called Mi-Enterprise Apps, that allows mobile app developers to manage, deploy and integrate mobile apps with all their enterprise infrastructure at a fraction of the cost and very quickly.

Q: What makes your company relevant to the future of your industry?
A: 14 years ago we led the marketplace in innovating and enabling Digital Transformations with Tablets, and we are doing it again with our new product-set. Given the rich history of our experience, the types of clients and partners we support around the world, Mi-Corporation’s success is important, relevant and a big part of the future of this industry as organizations start to adopt Tablets in a mainstream way and undergo this historic transformation.

Q: Will your company be participating in any upcoming trade shows or other events?
A: Yes, quite a few. The US Department of Commerce is hosting Mi-Corporation at a couple of events in Canada in May, including a Mobile Data Capture best practices workshop in Calgary, Alberta. In June we will be at the Enterprise Mobility Exchange event in Washington DC and many others in the fall as well. See our Events calendar here: http://www.mi-corporation.com/news-events/events/
